People who know me know that I can go on practically ad infinitum about the cool things that are happening around town, especially in
what I have begun to refer to as the Renaissance District. I tell myself that I coined that phrase, but it’s possible that I heard someone else say it and it stuck. Sounds like a Byron Berry thing, actually. Anyway, regardless of who thought of it first, renaissance is an apt descriptor for Montgomery’s downtown district, which has
undergone a vertiable evolution in the last 180 days. If you haven’t noticed, then you probably just haven’t been down here, so come and take a look! Check out what’s happening at the Lofts at Montgomery Fair on Dexter Ave., or at 29 & 31 S. Court Street, which you can read about in this issue.

The Alley - Downtown's Entertainment District
...So, you never know where exciting news will come from, and this month it surfaced inside the walls of Montgomery’s City Hall, where Lindsey Henig met with Jeff Downes, the Executive Assistant to the Mayor, to learn firsthand about the plans for The Alley, soon to be .
Montgomery’s downtown entertainment district.
Urban Green - Here Comes Hampstead
For many River Region residents, the perfect beach vacation involves a trip to Gulf Coast hotspots like Seaside, Rosemary Beach or Alys Beach. The mixture of convenient uses combined with interesting architecture and a relaxed, walking atmosphere make these new towns extremely popular with locals.
Soon though, you won’t have to drive to the beach to enjoy such benefits, as the firm who designed Seaside—the awarding winning Duany, Plater-Zyberk & Company (DPZ)—will debut its first, and only, River Region community. The project is called Hampstead.
Trendsetters & the Downtown Draw
From the convention center to the Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church, Montgomery’s downtown is undergoing a facelift. Around every
corner and at every intersection, the progress can be seen.
“The exciting thing about the revitalization,” one downtown resident says, “is where there used to be abandoned and run-down buildings, there are now architecture firms, lofts and lawyers offices. The architectural treasures of Montgomery are being restored, and the whole city is benefiting from it.”
Less than two months after the approval of the new Downtown Master Plan, the benefits are already being realized, and the gain significant. The completion of Court Square Plaza was one of the first milestones in the newly adopted Plan, and now the flywheel is turning.
The downtown resurgence is underway. For a complete copy of the newly approved Downtown Montgomery Plan, Visit www.doverkohl.com
