The Count of Monte Cristo delivers a gratifying performance at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival

Review by Jamie Foster

As a fan of the well-known book, The Count of Monte Cristo written by Alexander Dumas, I eagerly anticipated seeing the novel adapted into the theatre at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival. Premiering May 2 and continuing through June 29, The Count of Monte Cristo is a story of heart-breaking romance and seat-grappling adventure; it is the timeless story of a man betrayed that must learn redemption and forgiveness.

The Count of Monte Cristo is a theatre production adapted and directed by Charles Morey that clings to the authentic tone of the novel. From the opening scene where lead character Edmond Dantes, played by actor Ray Chambers, is found locked away in a dungeon for an unknown crime, the play begins the archetype of introspection that leads to the metanoia of an individual. While carrying many Christian undertones, The Count of Monte Cristo illuminates the struggle of overcoming betrayal by those held most dear. Graceful and fluid transitions from scene to scene and excellent blocking create a masterpiece that draws the viewer into the very plot itself. From the wit of Chet Carlin as Abbé Faria to the beauty of Sarah Dandridge as Mercedes, captivating stage presence along with clever and humorous dialogue sustain viewers’ interest throughout the play.

With many added plot twists in the story and an impeccably scripted garrison of supporting characters, Morey creates a beautiful telling of revenge that leads to redemption through a rebirthing of the heart that will challenge the viewer to introspect his or her own acts of reciprocation and whether or not they are truly satisfying.
